City Council Redistricting Map approved - K2.5, now goes into public hearings.
This is the proposed redistricting map, K2.5 (screen grab) that was agreed upon by the redistricting commissioners last night (9-30-21). You will see that Shadow Hills & La Tuna Canyon could either be CD2 - Paul Krekorian, or become CD4, which would be Nithya Raman (https://councildistrict4.lacity.org/). They casually mentioned they would let the city council decide who gets what district. (!)
Yesterday a neighbor in Shadow Hills walked her dogs past the corner of Art St. and Stonehurst Ave. She took this photo looking north.
She realized that if the current K2.5 map goes all the way to formal adoption by the City Council, that the houses to her right would be in District “2 or 4”. The houses to her immediate left the houses would be in District 6, and the houses to her upper left, would be in District 7.
We are appalled that the Redistricting Committee would feel free to callously divide this neighborhood into three districts, diluting our voices and making it very very hard for us to address our neighborhood concerns. As you can see, this is a regular neighborhood street, not very busy, and not in a very wealthy area. It has a local elementary school on one corner. But it is in a unique neighborhood, with horses, goats, pigs, and chickens on many properties. There are glorious views of the San Gabriel and Verdugo mountains from many streets.
Our community has problems with traffic and speeding on its main road (Sunland Blvd.) and some side roads, which jeopardize both equestrian and horse safety. It is located in a very high-risk fire area; homeless encampments, prevention of brush fires, fire insurance, and evacuation plans, etc. are shared concerns for us all. We have found a responsive and proactive councilwoman to help us address these problems in CD7.
We urge you all to ask the Redistricting Commission to not punish the community of Shadow Hills by ripping it apart, placing neighboring stakeholders in three districts, and not allowing many residents to be represented by their own Foothill Trails District Neighborhood Council.
Tonight there is a meeting; please consider joining the zoom meeting and raising your hand to speak. So far, no one from Shadow Hills has been chosen to speak about this map.
If you haven't already, please email the Commission to let them know that Shadow Hills needs a united voice to deal with our community concerns (contact info below).

THE MORE PEOPLE WHO SPEAK FROM SHADOW HILLS, THE BETTER! YPU WILL HAVE ONE MINUTE.
THE MAIN POINTS SHPOA SUGGESTS THESE MAIN TALKING POINTS:
1. Shadow Hills should be kept together in one district: CD7. The border lines for the Shadow Hills community, which need to be kept together, are as follows:
—The 210 Freeway on the EAST
—The ridgeline between Sunland Blvd. and La Tuna Canyon Road on the SOUTH
—The Big Tujunga Wash on the NORTH and NORTHWEST.
—The Landfills along Glenoaks and Sheldon on the WEST.
The K2.5 maps severs homes along Stonehurst (a main north-south street in Shadow Hills,) and west of Stonehurst, homes north and Northeast of McBroom, as well as many the streets off of these Main Streets, away from the rest of Shadow Hills. The people living on these streets would no longer be stakeholders in their own community.
2. The entire Shadow Hills Community needs to stay with the rest of the Foothill Communities of Lake View Terrace, La Tuna Canyon, and Sylmar as they currently are in CD7. All the streets in the above boundaries of Shadow Hills as well as Lake View Terrace and La Tuna Canyon share common interests, history, and equestrian heritage, agrarian lifestyles, and share the common concerns of living in high fire zones, equestrian and equine safety, evacuation plans, and traffic issues. We would all like to remain in CD-7.
3. If most of Shadow hills is moved out of CD-7, the Foothill Trails District Neighborhood Council (FTDNC) will be split up and irrelevant. We would like to remain in CD-7 so we can continue represented by our own neighborhood council.
4. By returning Shadow Hills and LaTuna Canyon back to CD7, this would add approximately 7400 people to CD7, which would not exceed the maximum population allowed per district.
5. PLEASE RECONSIDER THE K2.5 MAP AND REPLACE THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY OF SHADOW HILLS AND LA TUNA CANYON BACK INTO CD-7.
There is no guarantee that people signing up to speak will be picked to speak.
